Introduction
Our mission at Lily’s Kitchen is to make the right choices for pets, people and the planet… And that starts with helping as many cats and dogs as possible tuck into our proper food, so they can live their best lives. We recognise that we have a responsibility to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking both within our business and in our supply chain, and we take this responsibility seriously.
This statement is published in accordance with Section 54 of the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 for the financial year January to December 2025 and outlines our position on workers’ rights and modern slavery. It applies to all parts of our business, and we expect all our business partners and suppliers to uphold these principles and to adopt similar approaches.
Our Organisation and Supply Chain
Lily’s Kitchen are a natural premium pet food business, founded in 2008 and became a certified B Corp in 2015. We use third party manufacturers based in the UK, EU and Southeast Asia to prepare and produce our recipes, carefully selected by our Product and Quality teams. We have two third party warehouses based in the UK and Germany who then serve our customers via trusted retailers and our online direct-to-consumer business all over the world. Each supplier we work with run in compliance with all relevant and applicable laws and regulations of the country and adhere to our ways of working including our Supplier Code of Conduct.
Through the processes described in this statement, we have not identified any instances of either modern slavery or human trafficking within our direct supply chain. However we know that the issue is complex and often concealed and remain committed to continuously improving our oversight and processes focusing on protecting and respecting all the people involved in making our food.
Our Policies on Modern Slavery
We have commitment from our CEO and Leadership Team to take all the steps we can to make sure no form of exploitation occurs in our business and have appointed our Head of Impact & Sustainability as responsible to carry out our obligations and improve processes over time. Our Modern Slavery Statement is published annually on our website and available to anyone.
We have agreed contracts with our manufacturing and warehousing partners which describes expectations of our suppliers. This includes our Code of Conduct, Human Rights Policy and General Sustainability Standards, including requirements to be audited to a SEDEX SMETA 4 pillar and to complete a Social and Environmental Self-Assessment Questionnaire.
Our Code of Conduct includes, amongst other areas, commitments to no child labour and no forced labour. These codes have been shared with our key suppliers who have formally agreed to uphold them.
All our policy documents are reviewed annually and we continue to work closely with our suppliers, having regular reviews and onsite visits.
Governance
Due Diligence and risk management
Manufacturers and Warehousing Partners
We oblige them contractually to maintain our policies, and not doing so would constitute a breach of contract. We audit all suppliers, regardless of their size, before bringing them onboard via a questionnaire and a site visit. We assess their compliance in the following areas:
-
Social and Environmental responsibility through the form of an SAQ (Self-Assessment questionnaire)
-
They are members of SEDEX and are externally audited to a SMETA 4 pillar audit once every 2 years
-
Compliance with our Code of Conduct and Human Rights Policy
We conduct quarterly supplier performance reviews across Supply Chain, Quality and Sustainability to understand their progress against improvement projects and targets which also helps us assess if the status in any area has changed and requires further assessment. We conduct ongoing on site audits at least every 2 years.
B Corp
As part of our commitment as a certified B Corp, we conduct a Human Rights Assessment across our value chain every 36 months and identify our most salient human rights risks. If any actual or potential risks are ever identified, we will prioritize and escalate in line with internal governance processes to determine and implement appropriate actions to mitigate or prevent harm. We also maintain a Human Rights Policy which is publicly available on our website.
Our Team
Lily’s Kitchen prides itself in going above and beyond the standard business requirements for employers. We are committed to fostering open and inclusive workplaces that are based upon recognised worker and human rights, where all employees and partners are valued, engaged and respected in line with our values.
To keep our people safe and protected at work, we have a number of different policies that everyone signs-up to as a Lily’s Kitchen employee. These policies are available for all Lily’s Kitchen employees to access at any time and it is mandatory for anyone new joining the business to have read through and understood these policies.
We have an employee code of business conduct, a health and safety policy and procedure, recruitment guidelines, disciplinary guidelines, grievance procedures and a whistleblowing policy along with a confidential reporting helpline, SpeakUp.
Stakeholders can report any suspected wrongdoing confidentially and anonymously through this helpline, including human rights violations such as modern slavery or human trafficking. All possible reports are recorded, and issues raised are investigated, tracked and monitored.
Training and Communication
To make sure that all of our team have a high-level understanding of the risks of modern slavery and human trafficking in our business, we provide awareness training for everyone working for us as part of their induction when they join the business. This includes examples of Modern Slavery and the practices and procedures we have in place as a business.
We’re currently working on the following to improve our training and communication:
-
Mandatory re-fresher training for all Lily’s Kitchen employees on Modern Slavery to raise awareness and understanding of how to respond to an issue should it arise
-
Work with all our key suppliers to provide us with or produce their own Modern Slavery Statement
Reporting Issues
We have a Stakeholder Grievance and Feedback Procedure which provides a fair and consistent process for stakeholders of Lily’s Kitchen to raise concerns or complaints about any aspect of the business. This is published on our website and available to all stakeholders regardless of their relationship, position or level of responsibility.
The grievance procedure can be used to raise concerns in parallel or in conjunction with, or instead of our whistle-blowing policy. As part of this policy, we have a confidential non-compliance reporting system SpeakUp, where any team member can raise concerns anonymously and these will be independently followed up.
We’re currently working on the following to improve our reporting of issues:
-
Ensure all our suppliers are made aware and have access to our Stakeholder Grievance and Feedback Procedure at all times.
